The Illusion of Thinking - Apple White Paper
Apple research has delivered a lot of value in the products used by millions, and while they are not recognized as a leader in the AI industry, their recognition as leaders in usable software is hard to deny. When Apple produces a paper challenging the hype of AI, it is worth a read.

Reasoning Models Evaluated
In June of 2025, Apple released a white paper whose primary focus was evaluating the current state of AI reasoning models. While the research deserves deeper understanding, it is poignant to note that the findings indicate that these models resemble thinking on minimally complex tasks, failing as the requirements increase.
Further worth noting is that non-reasoning models have superior performance on more trivial tasks.
But what does this mean in the context of the current commercial state of AI? Unless superior mathematical models are discovered, AI has hit a bottle neck as filling the shoes of no more than junior team mates. While this has value to any business, it only further illuminates the troubled decision making due to the hype currently being used to reduce head counts in the hundreds of thousands.
Hopefully as more of this research comes to light, we can get back to the business of updating and replacing older software, instead of trying to use software to update and replace human talent.
